>> WHETHER IT'S BISCUITS, BEANS OR BEEF, the profit equation is the same.

Getting ahead seems, at various times, a complex, difficult or flukey business. We often find ourselves at the mercy of outside influences.

So, we found it refreshing to hear the whole challenge of commercial cattle production reduced down to a simple single mission statement.

It came from invited US cattle judge Gearld Fry who was interviewed on ABC radio during the 2011 Ekka. Gearld Fry is a pioneer of AI and ET and a noted authority on cattle breeding generally. He is a person who has a firm handle on cattle breeding trends in the US where the national beef herd is at its lowest point since 1958. Asked about the difference between survival or failure in a tough situation, Gearld put it succinctly, as Americans often do: ‘Oh well,’ he said, ‘the job is just to turn grass into dollars and cents’.

Which brings us to Charolais and Charbrays, the perfect vehicle to get that job done. Few breeds will turn grass into dollars and cents more efficiently and economically than these two breeds. As a welcome change, the grass is growing, and with some major retailers now preferring hormone-free beef, maybe there are compelling reasons to invest in naturally faster-growing Charolais and Charbray genetics, including the fact that these breeds reach market specifications for both weight and grading much earlier in life, which has proven to be a major criteria in obtaining MSA grading.

>> FAIR DINKUM BULLS BRED FOR FAIR DINKUM CATTLE PRODUCERS

The bulls catalogued for this year’s Huntington Spring Bull Sale — 51 Chaolais and 100 Charbrays — have been bred ‘for fair dinkum cattle producers by fair dinkum cattle producers’ and will be sent far and wide into ‘real world conditions’ to reproduce fast-growing, uniform, easy marketable beef. We have ultimate confidence in this prediction based not only on the strength of this year’s draft, but also reassured by testimony (some printed throughout out 2011 catalogue) from satisfied repeat buyers who report great success with Huntington seedstock.

Consistency is paramount to Huntington’s breeding philosophy. Our stated objective is to ensure that our clients’ product lines up in the market place, or hangs up in the works shed, with the same uniformity and predictability you will find in our lineup of sale bulls.

The Huntington bulls in this sale, on average, are quite a few kilos lighter than our usual offering. These youngsters must have wondered what sort of world they were born into. Calved in the summer of 09/10, one of the driest seasons on record, they were then grown out in one of the wettest. They have had to endure the toughest of times, then learn to swim—fast. To present as well as they do is proof of their inherent genetic strength, and augurs well for their future productivity.

>> CONFIDENCE IN OUR PRODUCT AND OUR PARTNERSHIPS

Again, we proudly partner with the Postle family of Branchview Charolais in offering a terrific selection of top grade Charolais bulls. The quality of the Branchview brand is well known and highly regarded and, like our own, is developed under commercial conditions and prepared and presented in the best interests of the commercial cattle producer.

Every year our confidence in the Charbray breed grows, particularly as it matures beyond its derivative breed origins into a recognised mainstream breed in its own right. The major benefits of this evolution into standalone status include genetic advancement and consolidation of breed predictability. Those considering joining in the exciting emergence of the Charbray breed will be reassured by the quality and consistency of this draft of bulls — by far the largest single vendor offering in Australia.

>> BREED IT, FEED IT, SELL IT, AND MOST OF ALL, ENJOY IT!

We breed it, feed it and sell it . . . and at our Spring sale we like to celebrate the best part too, which is to eat it. We say the best beef is a succulent sizzling steak straight from the chargrill, and no meat suits a chargrill better than beef that starts with the letters C-h-a-r: Charolais and Charbray.

So as a thank you to buyers at this year’s sale, we’ve bought three brand new barbecues, or more specifically, Huntington Charbecues. At the conclusion of the sale a draw will be held and three buyers will be taking a Charbie home with our compliments.

>>SO, ONCE AGAIN we offer you a warm welcome.

We look forward to catching up with you on Friday, September 30, 2011 and please, if you can, allow time on the day for a yarn and to enjoy some post sale refreshments.

Lets get things cooking!

Matt & Luke Welsh, on behalf of Huntington and Branchview Studs.
