A brief history of Huntington.

>> In good seasons the Taroom district is God's own cattle country.

In such obliging times early spring storms sweep through the undulating countryside, backed up by good summer rain depressions, filling the creeks and dams ready for the months ahead. Feed grows high on the ground and meat grows thick and quick on the cattle.

Unfortunately, as anyone who has been involved in rural based business for any length of time knows, good seasons are very much the exception rather than the norm. When the heavens refuse to cooperate and the rains fail, the grass wilts and dies and so too do inferior cattle. In harsher times and climes it takes a special type of animal to survive and succeed.

Thus was the impetus, in the early 1980s, which started the Welsh family thinking seriously of protecting their developing and expanding commercial cattle operation from these constant vagaries of the seasons.

>> A perfect solution

The answer was clear -- genetic advancement -- and the benefits that the Charolais breed would offer their high-grade Brahman herd presented the perfect solution.

And so, after countless hours of research and study, and with a modest budget and enthusiastic ambitions, the Welsh family began their foray into the Charolais world.

The introduction of the new Charolais sires spearheaded the greatest impact on the commercial bottom line in the operation's history, at the same time turning the operation's main focus towards breeding and selecting sires to continue this positive change within the herd.

By benefit of their long, dedicated and successful experience in commercial beef cattle production, the Welshs were able to pinpoint the exact genetics they knew would give them the desired outcomes.

>> The 'Huntington Type'

The animals which emerged from this program were exactly to the Welshs' specifications...the Huntington Type...reproductively sound cattle emphasising easier finishing and extra growth.

While always maintaining their 'commercial focus', the Welshs nevertheless run a very small Show team. Successes in the showring, including Grand Champion bulls at the Brisbane Royal Exhibition in both Charolais and Charbrays, and Grand Champion Interbreed bull at Toowoomba Royal Show, are confirmation that their genetics program (i.e. The Huntington Type) is right on course.

Today, with one of the largest and most impressive Charolais and Charbray gene pools in the industry, Huntington Stud combines, with precision, their Charolais, Charbray and Brahman bloodlines to produce cattle loaded with the traits required for the larger commercial industry.

>> We love talking cattle

Whatever your particular needs, there is a Charolais or Charbray at Huntington who can fulfil them to perfection (see our case studies).

The Welsh Cattle Co office is situated at "The Five Mile", close to the highway just north of Taroom. This makes it very accessible for displaying our cattle and having visitors drop in, so anytime you are in the area, please call and say hello.
